How can we make better use of the food resources of our oceans?

By treating ocean resources differently, the current food stock could be multiplied by six. Every year, nearly 80 million tons of food are taken from the oceans.

If population growth continues at the same rate, specialists estimate that food production will have to double by 2050. The solution would be to raise fish stocks.

An Food from the oceans produces 20 times less CO2 than meat. Molluscs and pelagic fish could be the new drivers of the food industry. While some scientists are developing CO2-eating bacteria, others are trying to change hard-established habits to save our planet.

Aquaculture is one of the responses to overfishing and the growing need for fish. It is sometimes used for reasons other than food consumption, for example in Europe via numerous « fish farms » built between 1850 and 1870, in the Alps, in particular to provide fish for restocking rivers or fishing ponds, for leisure fishing, fishing competitions (with risks of genetic pollution or the spread of pathogens), etc. or in Japan to reintroduce shrimps or abalones into the environment where these animals have been overexploited or have disappeared for other causes such as pollution.
